Fermented Foods

Mini blog post of info-

Fermented foods are products created through the process of fermentation, where microorganisms such as bacteria, yeast, or molds break down sugars and starches into simpler compounds. Common examples include yogurt, kimchi, kefir, kombucha, and miso.

Fermentation enhances the nutritional profile of food, produces probiotics— live beneficial bacteria that plays a crucial role in maintaining gut health.

A healthy gut is more than just a happy stomach. It is home to trillions of microorganisms known as the gut microbiome.

When the guy microbiome is balanced, it helps to:

  • Improve digestion and nutrient absorption
  • Strengthen the immune system
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Enhance mood and mental clarity
  • Promote healthy skin

Magnesium Deficiency

Magnesium is always found as a compound because it bonds easily with other elements. The body stores 50-60% of magnesium in your body, but we need to consume larger amounts. Good way is through foods but most of it are unhealthy ingredients such as: seed oil, unhealthy fats, processed foods, gluten, alcohol, and sugar. Foods that contain a decent amount of magnesium include: nuts and seeds, dark green vegetables, dark chocolate, fatty fish, and legumes.

There are different types of magnesium: magnesium citrate, magnesium glycinate, magnesium oxide, magnesium chloride, magnesium lactate, magnesium malate, magnesium L-threonate, and magnesium sulfate.

Common uses: Pill form, powder, topical lotion or oil and bath salts infused with magnesium.

Here are some ways magnesium can help: supports bone health, can help relieve menstrual cramps, supports cardiovascular health, promotes better sleep, supports muscle soreness from exercise recovery, supports a healthy stress response in your body, may help some anxiety and depression. (but always do your own research as well)

Magnesium can also have some great benefits for skin, these include: visibly calm skin irritation, reduce excess oil in your skin, aid in soothing inflammation, reduce conditions like dermatitis, and moisturize the skin plus improve skin barrier function.

As far as a supplement I like Bioptimizers magnesium I will attach the link below

Apple Cider Vinegar Info

Apple cider vinegar contains probiotics which can help with digestion and gut health.

I found this link https://www.mdanderson.org/cancerwise/what-are-the-health-benefits-of-apple-cider-vinegar.h00-159696756.html that talks about the benefits of drinking apple cider vinegar. A few ingredients that stood out to me are:

  • Acetic Acid- can help kill harmful bacteria
  • Probiotics- boost the healthy bacteria in our microbiome
  • Polyphenols- are an antioxidant that can reduce cellular damage by free radicals

Apple cider vinegar is acidic, so i would suggest diluting it before drinking it. This can be with water or another liquid as well. This may also help with indigestion and or acid reflux.

Functional Food

How many servings of Fruits and Vegetables should you be eating each day?

Since you were young, you’ve likely been reminded to “eat your fruits and veggies”. It’s true, fruits and vegetables are some of the most nutrient dense foods you can include in your diet, providing an array of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients to fuel various health supporting pathways and functions from within.

Now according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), women ages 19 to 32 should be consuming 2.5 to 3 cups of vegetables each day while women of any older age can stick with 2 to 3. For men, 3 to 4 cups is recommended, but for men 60 or older, 2.5 to 3.5 is suggested. Most people should be consuming 5 to 13 servings of fruits and vegetables each day. This breaks down to about two different vegetables and three fruits. Serving sizes vary depending on your vegetable of choice, and from canned to juiced to raw it can be helpful to know what classifies a serving. According to the American Heart Association (AHA) in order to get the proper volume of leafy greens you should be eating one cup each day. Fresh, frozen, or canned vegetables require about a half a cup, ass well as raw vegetable juice.

Cruciferous vegetables can be more difficult to determine as you can necessarily imagine packing a head of cauliflower or broccoli into a half cup, so the AHA explains that five to eight florets can be counted as a serving. One raw carrot or eight baby carrots will count towards your five a day, and a half of a bell pepper will work towards that as well. All vegetables ultimately offer some benefit to your body, but at the top of the list are the leafy greens which provide a significant impact on longevity. Consuming one serving of leafy greens such as kale, spinach and collards each day have shown to support cognitive function, and our brain health is critical as well. Now when I think about consuming 5 to 13 servings of fruits and vegetables daily that sometimes sounds like an overload. But it can actually be quite simple. Some companies have an easy way to get those daily servings in a convenient packet. The company I use is called Neolife, it has been around since 1958 and still going strong. They have this product called Pro Vitality. Convenient on-the-go packets and each packet provides powerful nutrients that support:

14. Root Vegetables- Radishes and beets carry nitrates that increase nitric oxide, a molecule integral to many cardiovascular functions. Carrots provide more than 300% of the recommended daily requirement of beta-carotene, a form of vitamin A that helps protect vision and enhance skin. Root vegetables supply plenty of soluble and insoluble fiber, which can boost the health of gut microbiota.

15. Citrus Fruits- These are high in citric and ascorbic acids. Although they are acidic, these fruits generate alkaline by-products and fans of the alkaline diet suggest they are alkaline. Lemons, oranges, limes, grapefruits, and tangerines are rich sources of vitamin C and supply generous amounts of vitamin A, potassium, magnesium, and folate!

Eating healthy is important for our mental and physical well being. Sometimes our bodies require some specific nutrients to be more active and healthy. The Brain also requires some important nutrients to function properly.

  1. Green Leafy Vegetables- are rich in vitamin B, vitamin C, vitamin E and magnesium all of which are important for proper functioning of our nervous system.
  • Vitamin B is essential in the process of synthesizing and circulating neurotransmitters, which are brain chemicals that regulate heartbeat, respiration and digestion.
  • Magnesium helps in calming the nerves

2. Fish- Fish contain very high levels of fatty acid. Lack in fatty acids can possibly result in damage of the nerves. Omega 3 fatty acids help in healing of the nerves and nervous system.

3. Dark Chocolate- Dark chocolate are full of flavonols which have anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant property. Benefits: Lower the blood pressure, improve blood flow to both brain and heart. 70% of chocolate available in the market are highly processed and barely have any benefits. 4. Broccoli- Broccoli is rich in vitamin K which is known to improve brain power and cognitive skills. Broccoli is rich in a compound called Glucosinolates which can slow the breakdown of the neurotransmitter, Acetylcholine, which the central nervous system needs to preform its function properly and keep our brain and memory sharp.

5. Eggs- Eggs are rich in Choline and B vitamin. When you consume eggs, the choline in them is used by the brain to make acetylcholine, which is a neurotransmitter that is important for memory and communication among brain cells.

6. Salmon- as already mentioned, omega 3 fatty acid has an important role to play in cognitive functioning. Low levels of omega 3 fatty acids can be linked to smaller brain volume and poor mental performance. Salmon is a rich source of omega 3 which can strengthen the brainpower.

7. Avocados- Rich in both vitamin K and folate, avocados can help prevent blood blot in the brain and can protect your from potential strokes. Avocados can help improve memory and concentration, they also have the highest protein and lowest sugar content as compared to any other fruit.

8. Almonds- They have high levels of brain-healthy omega 3 fatty acids and lots of brain-protecting vitamin E just like the salmon fish.

9. Pumpkin Seeds- These are an excellent source of magnesium, copper, iron and zinc. Pumpkin seeds contain powerful antioxidants that protect the body and brain from free radical damage.
